Thermos Hot Food Lunch Ideas Made Easy

By Sherrie Le Masurier

Nothing puts a smile on your child’s face faster than a thermos hot food lunch from home.

Whether it’s a favorite homemade soup, chilli or leftovers from the night before you just can’t beat a thermos hot food lunch packed with love.

A thermos hot food lunch can be anything your child desires as long as it warms up their insides and is reasonably nutritious. That said the occasional thermos of boxed macaroni and cheese or canned pasta is also okay for those days when time and opportunity have got the better of you.

Following our some of my favorite thermos hot food lunch recipes you can make ahead and freeze in individual portions. Simply defrost in the fridge overnight and warm in the microwave in the morning.

Please note I’ve added some pack along suggestions to the recipes that appear below, these little extras can really turn your child’s lunch into a memorable experience. You’d be surprised the difference a snack bag of shredded cheese or crisp crackers can make to the whole lunch experience.

Speaking of the whole lunch experience, don’t forget to pre-warm your child’s thermos with hot water first and include a spoon. It’s hard to eat chilli with your hands!

Kid-Style Chili Corn Soup

1 tbsp. vegetable oil
1 small onion, chopped
1 tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp. oregano
1 can diced tomatoes (include liquid)
1 cup chicken broth
1 can corn, drained (reserve liquid)
1 can kidney beans, drained, (reserve liquid)

In a large saucepan, sauté onion in the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chili powder, garlic powder and oregano. Cook for another 3 minutes while stirring frequently. Pour in the can of tomatoes, then the chicken broth and the reserved corn and bean liquid. Bring everything to boil. Reduce the heat and simmer on medium-low approx. 5 minutes or so. Serves 4 to 6.

Pack along side a bag of shredded cheese for sprinkling on top and a hearty roll.

Cook onion in oil until tender. Stir frequently. Sprinkle flour and seasoning over onions and cook another minute. Add milk. Continue to cook and stir until mixture comes to a boil and thickens. Add potatoes and corn. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover pan and simmer for 10-15 minutes until potatoes are tender. Add chicken and heat thoroughly.
